BREAKING NEWS: CITY SUBS TO OPEN NEXT WEEK
By Sam S. Reiss
MIDTOWN MANHATTAN - City Subs, the new iteration of the popular and infuriating Park Slope, Brooklyn sandwich shop City Sub, will be open for business next week.
The original City Sub, on Bergen Street, which was normally closed Thursdays, shuttered under mysterious circumstances over a year ago. Sometimes it would run out of bread. Or it would close for lunch, and customers could only get sandwiches between 11 and 2 and then, like, 4 to 5. Or it would close earlier.
The new City Subs storefront is on 5th Avenue and Prospect but hasn't been open. A small piece of paper that said "City Subs" on it was on the front window in July, and a bigger one later that month, and then a sign. An Instagram comment by its official account, @CitySub_Bk, wrote it would be open in "September..."
Thomas Moran, "the last remaining employee" at the original City Sub, told NYMag.com in a late July interview he was hoping to have the store open by late August. It has not been open any of the times I have been by there since late August, which is often.
The original owner was only referred to as Mark. The official Instagram account, @CitySub_BK, was announced 13 weeks ago-- --by an auto body shop in Staten Island, Authorized Auto Body. He says he runs the shop with someone whose Instagram handle is @dagrind. Neither are named mark, or Thomas. Snake America has not been able to confirm whether the current ownership group has any connection to Mark, or whether it will keep his preferred hours.
I can't believe it's back.
