Hello—lots of action this week… Onto the furniture.
Obs 146: 60s wood IKEA
Vintage Rosewood Ikea piece, Ct.: Rare to see old Ikea on auction—only one’ listed in the past year, only one sold before (this sideboard). Rarer still to see a wooden one either on auction or on display. Didn’t know they made this; rosewood, no designer name. A terrific piece, doing a couple things at once; It’s from the 1960s…. anything from the past 45 years; no way it’s happening. It’s from a strong Wednesday auction in Connecticut, and another rosewood dresser like it (a bit different) is in there as well. About the design: it’s a bit counterintuitive, fitting in oddly with IKEA—it’s more maximal than a regular rosewood credenza and has a real midcentury shape… while their stuff hews to earliest ‘60s. It’s also so… ornamented. It is a real artifact though—so rare to see anything by IKEA in wood. Not particle board, not junk, but good wood.
