The same eBay fake price scam happens with other low-brow mass market collectible stuff like old Disney VHS etc., I guess to try and increase the price of any potential sales. I think there is a lot written about the Disney stuff online so it might give some more context. I wish it was something more exciting like money laundering but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Such a good direction to explore - where there are actually markets and where there's just manipulation...
